The Hanged Man

From time to time, I use ideas from the art world or historical sources as an inspiration for my bondage. “The hanged man” is a tarot card and goes back to a decree of the year 1393 for Milan and Lombardy. The figure refers to Odin, who hanged himself upside down on one leg in order to gain more wisdom in this position. He is looking into the water flowing past him, which symbolises time/the flow of life. More recent interpretations show a man hanging upside down from a cross by only one ankle. There are many historical interpretations of this figure ranging from punishment to self-sacrifice to attaining knowledge and wisdom. For me, the aspects of deep rapture (not suffering in a negative sense) and the whole life in suspension, attaining wisdom and living consciously in time (here and now), are important.
